Dubious Lakewood Airport To Expand Runway For All The Corporate Jets Waiting To Visit

The Lakewood Airport was originally owned by prominent Township lawyer Lawrence Bathgate. About thirty years ago when Bob Singer joined the committee, the failing airport was purchased in a controversial deal by the Township for over three million dollars, giving the owner a heady profit. The Township never put the airport to any use and it continued to lose money every year since. Now for some reason there is a push to use public money to expand the airport runway without any regard to what profit or benefit the town can gain from the project.

The project to reclaim some of the lost length of Lakewood Airport’s runway, has begun. With the full use of the runway, the airport would be able to accomodate up to 15 passenger seat jets.

Once again our town is focusing on projects that we do not benefit from, unless we are planning on parking our corporate jet here.

As always, those left in charge put the cart before the horse. The fantasy of having corporate jets flying into an airport surrounded by thousands of homes and schools, takes precedence to actually creating jobs, and bringing viable businesses to Lakewood.

And the most remarkable part of the whole thing is that they try to make the people of Lakewood believe that it is for their own good.

The airport is making longer runways so BMG could bring in their money people and political friends. When is the Township going to hand over the Airport to BMG, with a never ending option? Ask Senator Singer.

Jose, the airport is not making the runways longer.....but recapturing existing space lost to obstructions that are being removed. Properly utilized, the airport SHOULD be an asset to the industrial park.

Before the emotions get out of hand, as I understand it the runway at Lakewood Airport WILL NOT BE LENGTHENED. What is going to happen is that the obstructions are to be cleared recapturing 500 or 600 feet of existing runway that could now be used. Bathgate, Singer and the Township Committee of 30 years ago has nothing to do with the current development of the airport. Could it help encourage tenants to come to the Industrial Park??? Yes, it shoukd, but will it?? Remains to be seen. I'd want to see the specs on a 15 passenger jet (Gulfstream III size) before I started touting the aierport's ability to accomodate them.
