The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene sent out an alert to medical providers warning them that another baby now has Herpes Simplex Virus 1 that was transmitted to the baby through metzitzah b'peh, the direct mouth-to foreskin sucking done briefly by many mohels after cutting off the foreskin.
The virus is common in the mouths of many adults but if passed through blood to a child it can cause blindness and even death. Two children have died in the past from the virus where it was suspected that it was contracted through the Metzitzah procedure.
