Thousands attended gatherings this past Thursday in Lakewood, Borough park, Monsey, and simulcast all over the country. Roshei. Yeshiva and Rabbis spoke about the dangers and challenges we face from the Internet and other technology that brings the whole world with all of its challenges right into the palm of our hands. Many people may feel that there is no more need to try to ban something that is already a major part of our lives, including many Yeshivas that use the technology. But the poi t of the gatherings was mainly to remind everybody what a great challenge we now face.
Just like every generation before us we must learn to try our best to use all technology for good. When the phone became commonplace suddenly our ability to spread loshon hora (slander) became exponentially easier. The car gave us an ability to go places we were not able to, and maybe we shouldn't. But all these technologies also gave us the ability to help people, to promote charity, and save lives. No technology is either good or bad. But it can make the good better or the bad worse.
We need gatherings like these to remind us of that.
