On the heels of the investigation that nabbed Spring Valley’s top elected officials this past week, law enforcement officials and watchdog activists are warning that opportunities for corrupt pols are in no shortage.

NEWSDAY is reporting that, when it comes to corruption, everything from real-estate deals to building permits to public jobs can be bought from unscrupulous pols looking to line their pockets.

Michael Castelluccio, an activist with the local watchdog group Preserve Ramapo, called the current system a “mess,” saying that the “confluence” of development, political power, and corruption has led so many elected officials down the wrong path that it “alternates” between “comical and depressing.”

Castelluccio called the current political culture “one gigantic dirt-bag circus.”

71-year-old operator of the Deerkill Day Camp Bob Rhodes says bribery related to real estate has a long history, in Rockland.

“Corruption around building in Ramapo goes back at least 50 years,” Rhodes said. “Zoning laws are being used to enrich builders and the intermediaries between the lawyers and the builders.

Rockland County DA, Thomas Zugibe, said he believes most elected officials truly act on behalf of their constituents, but that cases of corruption like this past week give everyone a “black eye.”

How dare you speak against our politicians & Board members. We are not a rich community, so we have to employ the best people money can buy. We are a success.
