Kimball medical center, the butt of many exaggerated jokes for years. Many people refuse to use their services except in the case of an emergency. I have always had only the best experiences with Kimball. The staff is always friendly. The Bikur cholim is amazing. The hospital is a little run down, but that is understandable considering the budget they work with. Surely those that make fun of our only hospital feel they need to ensure their good health with a" higher level of care" and are dismissive to that which is easily available.
On a recent visit as I waited for somebody in a waiting room I picked up a Consumer Reports Magazine. The issue was rating the hospitals in 44 states. I was curious to see where Kimball was on the list of New Jersey hospitals. Jersey Shore hospital, Monmouth Medical, surely Kimball is on here somewhere. Keep going, keep going, oh there it is, the bottom of the list. Ok then, but New Jersey has the top hospitals in the country. The bottom of this list couldn't be too bad. It got worse. Consumer reports listed the ten worst hospitals out of the 1100 surveyed. There was our very own Kimball Medical at nummber six. Not the worst but very far from being considered even marginal.
The report was based on statistics for infections, cleanliness, and General malpractice. It was not based on doctors or nurses abilities.
How could a town the size of Lakewood with a large amount of small children and seniors have one of the worst hospitals in the country?
How can a Senator representing us that was on the board of the hospital have allowed it to operate in such a manner?
If he cared about his constituency instead of profits only, perhaps we could have a hospital that we could feel safe to go to in cases of urgency.
How many emergency situations could have had a better outcome if the patient didn't have to be transported a half hour away?
As it is with almost everything that our good Senator has had his hand in(downtown development, blue claws, cogen plant etc.) we are now left to pick up the pieces.
For our own safety and for the safety of our neighboring towns, we need to find an answer to this problem.
Any suggestions where to start?
