The Lakewood Development Corporation (LDC), with the support of the Lakewood Township Committee, approved another $500,000 for Lakewood Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) businesses added to the original 1 million allocated for businesses adversely impacted by hurricane Sandy.
So far they have approved about 40 loans, totaling $1.2 million dollars. Many businesses in Lakewood’s UEZ zone were without power for two weeks or more. Some suffered losses and were eligible to apply to FEMA for a low cost SBA loan. The VAAD influenced UEZ felt it was important to dole out millions to specific businesses.
Once again this is an expensive attempt of the UEZ to try to seem relevant and concerned for creating a positive business environment in Lakewood. This is being done in order to continue wasting our most valuable resources for personal projects that put money into certain people’s pockets. Most of These loans are going to businesses that have no immediate need for the money. Yes some will get up and thank the ldc and UEZ for saving their lives, but if the main focus would be for the UEZ to fund projects that make it easier to start new businesses that will spur job growth and revitalize our infrastructure at the same time, more people of Lakewood would be helped equally.
The UEZ and ldc needs to be disbanded and placed under the direct control of the Township Committee. There should be full transparency, so everyone can see how the money spent can benefit the most people possible.
