Bob Singer is once again busy sponsoring bills that have a minimal impact on most people in his state. Instead of focusing on real issues he busies himself promoting legislation that is either unenforceable or irrelevant. It was already illegal for anyone under the age of 14 to use a tanning booth. Our Senator feels now that even with parental consent a 16 year old girl should not be allowed to get a tan before her sweet 16 party. A twelve year old cannot get a spray tan before her bat mitzva celebration even if the parents allow it, yet they can buy a can of spray tan at any store and apply it themselves?
Senator Singer’s S-1172 prohibits minors younger than 14 from spray tanning and those younger than 17 from using tanning beds in tanning facilities. Seventeen-year-olds can use tanning beds only if a parent or guardian is present at the tanning facility for initial consultation.“Tanning can be habit-forming, and children and young teens are the most-vulnerable to the life-threatening risks of skin cancer,” Singer emphasized. A person who violates S-1172 faces a $100 degree penalty for a first offense and $200 for each subsequent offense. Tanning facility operators who violate are subject to $1,000 fines for first offense, $2,000 for second offense, and $2,000 with a five-day suspension of operations for each subsequent offense.“
No word yet whether Singer plans on fining teenagers that look unusually dark. Young Girls with less than fair skin may be questioned by police as to where they got their tan?
Will he be banning teenagers from the beach? Perhaps all children will be checked to make sure they are wearing proper sunscreen.
Note to Singer: More people die each year in traffic fatalities due to drunk driving than any adverse effects from tanning booths. As a matter of fact, a tanning booth is probably safer than the Cogen plant that you brought to Lakewood twenty years ago. Why don't we find out why so many children in Lakewood are being diagnosed with rare forms of cancer, yet have never entered a tanning salon.
