A BOE meeting to discuss the budget and the 4.5 million dollar increase is scheduled tonight. Yes, Tonight, in the middle of the Passover holiday, the day before the Sabbath, and a time that many people Are either away from home for Passover or Easter weekend. How convenient.

I am currently in Israel. I noticed that many homes here have elaborate security systems. I was explained that there are many break-ins, and that the thieves are very ingenious. Especially on holidays when they know people will be away for a specific amount of time they can strike with a reckless abandon on a persons home. Thieves climb terraces and saw through bars on windows assured that nobody is watching them when everyone is in Synagogue or away having a Seder by their parents.

And that is how our Township Committee and our BOE like to operate as well. They wait until everyone is busy preparing for the high holy days and then, voila! We have a Baseball Stadium or a parking garage or approvals for a development that neighbors are protesting. Or as in this case a 4.5 million dollar increase in the school budget without the attention of the people that will pay for it.

Professionals indeed.

So the BOE, who is made up of a majority of Orthodox, are trying to pass a 4.5 million dollar increase on their own brethren who make up a majority of tax payers in town while most of the people are away for the holidays. Shame on them. I do believe the towns people should storm the BOE meetings and demand this be stopped and/or reversed.

The Board of Education this evening voted down the school budget – which included an increase of over $5 million dollars, as earlier reported on News Alerts. The budget was unanimously voted down by all members present – Carl Fink, Tracy Tift, Joel Schwartz, Isaac Zlatkin and Lee Mund. The proposed budget was $78,031,500, which included a net increase of $5,257,113. Items set to increase according to the proposed budget, are: Transportation: 2.4 million, Health benefits for employees 1.2 million, Increase in negotiated salaries: 900,000, Increase in tuition costs: 3 million, and Increase in services: 230,000. Prior to roll call on the vote, statements were made by multiple members of the board, including Joel Schwartz. “As an elected member of the public, I have an obligation to the children of Lakewood as well as to the taxpayers. I reviewed the budget that’s been presented to me tonight for a vote. I am confident that both the BA and Superintendent who worked countless days, hours and weekends, presented the most lean yet realistic budget without compromising the services of the children of Lakewood. I would like to commend them for their tireless efforts on behalf of the children of Lakewood. Unfortunately, our taxpayers simply cannot afford it. We need more Federal and State Aid to help our very unique district.” Schwartz was glad he attended the important meeting, despite it coinciding with Chol Ha’moed Pesach. “I was there tonight to show my support to the administration for doing the best the were able to, given the circumstances they were facing with the funding formula. They understand our objection to the burden the taxpayers would be facing. I felt it was one the most important meeting of the year to be in

The budget now heads to the County for review. TLS

The LAC members that ran under the singular banner of reducing our taxes never informed the public about the tax increase because they planned on allowing it to pass. They didn't even bother to show up to have it voted down. If taxes was their only concern, why was it never mentioned in any of the many publications or websites that they often send their propaganda to? Why were they absent for the vote? Exactly. It is time to send those clowns packing. We need some responsible members that are as dedicated as Joel Schwartz to come up with real solutions to our problems in the schools.
